Enslaved Individuals: Rebecca

Rebecca

Documented History

Rebecca was a resident of Page County, Virginia, in 1845; she is listed as a girl among seven enslaved individuals in an inventory of the estate of Daniel Strickler taken in June of that year. She was allocated to Stricker’s wife Elizabeth in the settlement of his estate. No further documentation of her life has yet been located.

Speculations

Rebecca is referred to as a girl in 1845, suggesting she was born between roughly 1832 and 1845.

A twenty-four-year-old black woman is listed in Elizabeth Strickler’s household on the 1850 slave census for Page County. If she is Rebecca, that would suggest a birthdate about 1825 or 1826. A twenty-eight year old mulatto woman is listed in the same household on the 1860 slave census; if she is Rebecca, that would suggest a birthdate of about 1831 or 1832, consistent with her having been listed as a girl in 1845. It is possible that both listings represent Rebecca, and that her age was overestimated in 1850.

Connections

Andrew, Arthur, Edmund, Mary, Mary Louisa, and Sarah were enslaved along with Rebecca in the household of Daniel Strickler as of 1845.
