Enslaved Individuals: Sarah
Sarah
Documented History
Sarah was a resident of Page County, Virginia, as a girl in 1845; she is listed as one of seven enslaved individuals in an inventory of the estate of Daniel Strickler taken in June of that year. She was sold to Addison A. Jones during the settlement of Strickler’s estate in June 1845. Further documentation of her life has not yet been located.
Speculations
Sarah is referred to as a child in 1845, suggesting she was born between 1832 and 1845.
A seventeen-year-old Black girl is listed (along with a 50-year-old Black woman and a twenty-one-year-old Black man) in Addison Jones’ household in Belford County, Virginia, on the 1850 slave census. If the girl is Sarah, she would have been born in approximately 1832 or 1833. The Jones family was enumerated in Page County in 1860, but no listing of enslaved people associated with the household has been located.
