Enslaved Individuals: Andrew

Andrew

Documented History

Andrew was a resident of Page County, Virginia, as a boy in 1845; he is named as one of seven enslaved individuals in papers from the estate of Daniel Strickler produced in June of that year. Andrew was sold, along with a woman named Mary, to Stricker’s son Harrison Strickler in the settlement of the estate. While little is known of his subsequent life, it is likely he was a skilled agricultural worker.

Speculations

Andrew is listed as a boy in the documents associated with Strickler’s estate, suggesting he was born sometime between 1832 and 1845. A Black man of nineteen, a Black man of twenty-one, and a Black woman of thirty-nine were enumerated in the Harrison Strickler household in Page County on the 1850 slave census; it is possible that Andrew was one of the two men.

Connections

Arthur, Edmund, Mary, Mary Louisa, Sarah, and Rebecca were enslaved along with Andrew in the household of Daniel Strickler as of 1845. Mary and Andrew went to the household of Harrison Strickler in June of that year.
